Merlin Top Primary Blog from Debbie at Think Forensic!

Debbie Hoyle from Think Forensic stood in front of year 6 students at Merlin Top Academy and asked the question – What does CSI stand for? It was clear from the children’s’ answers they had already studied some elements surrounding forensic science with one brilliant 11 year old knowing that DNA was an abbreviation for deoxyribonucleic acid!

After a discussion about CSI and evidence gathering the students set to work ink rolling their fingerprints and deciding whether they had whorls, loops or arch patterns. They enjoyed seeing for themselves how fingerprints are developed in the field of crime and how shoeprints could be revealed on seemingly blank paper using the ever impressive magnetic powder that even tidies itself up!

Another of the session’s highlights involved the use of the company’s digital microscope, students were delighted to see the tiny details of different fibres and weave patterns in the school uniform and this soon led to requests for microscopic examination of the student’s hair and skin and accompanying cries of excitement.

It was a brilliant day, the children were really engaged and asked some very probing questions! Well done Merlin Top Academy.
